YOUNG WRITER SUPPORT

Make your dreams

your reality.

When I told my primary school teacher that I was going to be a writer when I grew up, they told me it was unlikely. That I should get a “real” job and keep writing on the side. But I knew that writing could never be “just” a hobby. My characters consumed me, writing themselves into fantastic worlds that I had to translate to the page.

I finished my first book, a middle-grade fantasy novel called Dragon Pearls, at the age of fourteen and the sequel, Crown My Heart, two years later. These books, still available for purchase today, are far from perfect—but they opened the door to several amazing opportunities that eventually resulted in working with ghostwriter Alee Anderson to build Hey! Young Writer, a website that aims to help young writers break into the literary industry.

When I first stepped into my role as Contributing Editor in 2021, I was writing a story per month and helping other young writers build their portfolios. Now, in addition to my full-time work as Lead Editor of Alee Anderson Editorial, I retain close ties to their team, which produces annual digital zines and runs workshops to help young writers expand upon and strengthen their writing, editing and designing skills.

Dragon Pearls

This is a fantasy adventure novel, about a teenager whose life turns around once she is introduced to dragons and magic. Elizabeth Gwin leads a painfully mundane life until she stumbles across a faux pearl necklace with the power to communicate with dragons. After becoming the new Queen of the Pearl Dragons, Elizabeth is threatened and is forced to flee her family for safety. Elizabeth seeks sanctuary in the Mythical Romani where she teams up with four other royals to assassinate the man determined to disturb the non-magical world.

Crown My Heart

A mixture of fantasy and adventure with a hint of romance, ‘Crown My Heart’ is about a young woman learning what it means to be a queen, a friend and herself. Having taken her place as Queen of the pearl dragons, Elizabeth Gwin is pressured from every side. Forced by an unforeseen villain to seek out Rosanna Mae Dranra, Elizabeth embarks on a journey to save those she cares for, the dragon tribes and herself. In pursuit of her happily ever after, she’s forced to face magic and horrors beyond anything she could ever have imagined.

Reader Reviews

“Loved this debut novel by a talented young author. Thoroughly enjoyable fantasy adventure which held my attention from start to finish, only leaving me disappointed that it was over. The reader is launched into a vivid, magical world populated by dragon riders, elves and trolls, along with heroine, Esther (aka Elizabeth) and her companion Liam; teenagers called upon to undertake a life or death quest to save the world from subjugation by the evil king of the trolls. Beautifully honest in its portrayal of young adult fears and emotions when faced with the ultimate responsibility for life and death. Looking forward to the sequel.”

“A fantastic coming of age story with a touch of magic and dragons! When Elizabeth purchased a small pearl necklace she did not expect for her entire world to be turn upside down. First she was chased by a dragon and then realizes that she can hear his voice in her head. Then she finds out that there is an entire island of dragons and that there is someone out to control them and rule the world. What does that have to do with her? Well, to find that out you just have to read the book!”

— Eunice, Owls Book Nest

“This novel is everything I had hoped the sequel would be. Just as Elizabeth has grown and matured so has the writing. It’s beautifully descriptive and you never quite know what’s around the corner. The ending in particular is superb (no spoilers!). Another great job by Deborah Rose!”
